Flying Carp are abundant on Children's day in Japan. This year May 5th falls on Sunday.

Children's day is now a combination of what used to be 'boys day' on May 5 and 'girls day' in March 3.
The celebration for girls traditionally has a display of dolls handed down from mother to daughter for generations. Boys dolls are samurai warrior dolls and carp streamers - which fly outside, usually above the house. There is a large carp representing the father, a medium carp representing the mother, and one small carp for each child in the family. The carp symbolizes strength and determination.
